第2回芭蕉庵国際英語俳句大会 選評
外国語俳句は日本の俳句の模倣や追蹤ではなく、その国、民族、言語の詩として俳句として優れたものでなければならない。
第二回の今回もクロアチアからの応募が圧倒的に多く、詩的に優れていた。いうまでもなくクロアチアの人々にとっても英語は母国語ではない。しかし彼らの詩心は言語の境界を容易く乗り越える。
特選(芭蕉庵賞)に選んだのは、
night jasmine-
her bloomed soul brings water
to a refugee Gatalica Goran
In this second Basho-an International English Haiku Competition, there were an impressive number of submissions from Croatia and they were poetically excellent. Needless to say, English is not the native language of Croatia. However, their poetical sense easily crossed language boundaries.
What was chosen as a 特選 (Basho-an Award) is as follows:
night jasmine-
her bloomed soul brings water
to a refugee Gatalica Goran
Happiness does not always nourish poetry. In fact, hardship can be the food of poetry. Croatian haiku is a gift of poetical sense, awakened and horned by a history of hardships.
As for the submissions by native Japanese speakers, they must communicate the inevitable reason for making them in a foreign language. Without it, it is just nonsense, a waste of words and abilities. A typical example is an entry that was simply translated from a haiku made in Japanese. In order to make an exceptional English Haiku, it may be necessary to develop the Haiku with an English mentality.
This time, despite the large number of Haiku that were submitted, extremely few submissions met that standard. I hope that this is not a reflection of the indifferent attitude of modern Japanese society.
Speaking of the submissions in general, there were many unnecessary prepositions and plural forms. I am looking forward to next time.(Kai Hasegawa)
