noon hunting
following me up the hill
a hawk’s shadow
Anthony Itopa Obaro
gallant butterfly-
I am godifying Your strong
born from the starlets
Paweł Markiewicz
The Hawk and the Swallowtail
Selector’s Comment
Hasegawa Kai
Among haiku composed in foreign languages, which ones are notably outstanding? There are two criteria that need to be met. One is whether they seem excellent as poems in their respective languages. The other is whether they will also move Japanese readers. Both of these points need to be considered.
For the first Sōka Matsubara International Haiku Competition, entries were invited in English and French, resulting in a total of 637 haiku from 200 entrants in 34 countries. From among these, the following haiku from Nigeria was selected for the Sōka Mayor’s Award:
noon hunting
following me up the hill
a hawk’s shadow
Anthony Itopa Obaro
The black shadow of a hawk glides over the red earth of Africa. In the course of his travels in the Oku no hosomichi, Bashō gained a sense of the silence of the cosmos listening to cicadas at the temple of Ryūshaku-ji, and this is also present here. In place of “noon hunting” in the first line, “the utter silence” (shizukasa) might do as well.
I chose the following verse as a tokusen or special selection:
gallant butterfly
I am godifying Your strong
born from the starlets
Paweł Markiewicz
The entry comes from Poland. “The grammar is a little strange,” I was told, but a sense of immensity is an important element to the poetic heart of haiku. Despite having grammatical flaws, such work should not be disregarded.
This time there were many excellent works among the entries from Croatia, Poland and Romania, and other countries in Eastern Europe, as well as from among those in Africa and Asia. None of them uses English as their mother tongue.
From inside Japan too there were many entries, and yet there was something of a problem. Many of these were merely translations into English or French of haiku in Japanese. Essentially they were haiku in foreign languages that had been conceived in Japanese.
Since there were many haiku on the subject of pine this time, it might be desirable to avoid a fixed theme next time, and I would look forward then to receiving work that has been composed quite freely.
